SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk promised on Monday that he will give each child in the United States one SpaceX share next year.
“I’m going to give every child in America a share of my SpaceX stock,” Musk wrote in a post on X at $TWTR. “This will be the first of many more.” According to Bloomberg and The Wall Street Journal, Musk did not provide details on how the gift would be distributed, who the recipients would be, or the timing.
SpaceX shares closed Friday at $146.03. With approximately 72 million American children, this gift would be worth around $10.5 billion, according to Bloomberg and CNBC. Considering approximately 73 million children under the age of 18, the total would be around $10 billion, according to The Wall Street Journal.
According to CNBC, the commitment came after Anthropic announced on Sunday that it plans to allocate a 5% stake to a newly created public benefit fund, subject to shareholder approval. Anthropic’s board of directors can add an additional 2% each time the company’s valuation, at an undisclosed seed stage, increases by 50%.
According to CNBC, Musk responded to Anthropic’s post on X, suggesting that the company’s shares be “directly distributed to the public” and adding that he would do the same.
According to CNBC’s report referencing an August SEC filing, Musk owns approximately $4.8 billion worth of SpaceX shares. When including unvested awards and options, this figure rises to 6.4 billion shares, corresponding to a 48.4% beneficial ownership stake.
SpaceX IPO’d at $135 per share in June. As lock-up restrictions on insider holdings began to expire, SpaceX shares fell as low as $105.11 in early August trading. Musk’s 6.4 billion shares remain locked up until June 2027.
According to the Wall Street Journal, earlier this year SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell and her husband pledged to allocate SpaceX shares for approximately 2 million children under the Trump Accounts initiative; the same source noted that Musk donated Tesla shares worth approximately $5.7 billion in 2021.
CNBC stated that it requested a comment from SpaceX.
